Self-Hosting Open WebUI: Your Own AI Workspace
weisser-dev/open-webuiOpen WebUI is a self-hosted web interface for interacting with language models — think ChatGPT, but running on your own infrastructure, against models you control, with no data leaving your network unless you explicitly choose it. I forked the project to follow its development closely and to experiment with local modifications, and it’s become a core part of how I interact with AI models day to day.
The setup story is genuinely good. A single docker-compose.yml can bring up Open WebUI alongside an Ollama instance, giving you a fully local chat interface in a few minutes on any machine with enough RAM. For more serious use, Open WebUI also supports connecting to remote model providers — Anthropic, OpenAI, and Amazon Bedrock via the access gateway I wrote about separately. Switching between a local Llama model for quick tasks and a powerful Bedrock model for complex work is a matter of selecting from a dropdown.
The feature set has grown substantially over the past year. Persistent conversation history, document upload with automatic RAG, prompt templates, model parameter controls, multi-user support with role-based permissions, and the Pipelines integration for custom AI middleware. What started as a clean alternative UI has become a fairly complete AI platform for self-hosters. The fact that everything is stored locally means you can export your entire conversation history at any time — no lock-in.
What I value most about running Open WebUI locally isn’t primarily the cost savings, though those are real. It’s the control over the data and the ability to integrate it with internal tools. When you’re building AI-powered workflows that touch internal documents, databases, or APIs, having the UI layer on your own infrastructure matters. The Pipelines framework lets you build custom integrations that would never be possible with a SaaS product. For any developer serious about AI tooling, self-hosting Open WebUI is worth the ten minutes of setup.
